On July 16 in Saigon and on July 18 in Melbourne, the Australia-Vietnam Leadership Dialogue (AVLD) officially announced the selection of 20 outstanding individuals as delegates for the Australia Vietnam Young Leadership Dialogue (AVYLD), taking place from 26th-30th of August in Melbourne, Australia.
The Saigon announcement ceremony was hosted at the Residence of the Australian Consul-General in Ho Chi Minh City Ms Sarah Hooper. The event was attended by Madame Ton Nu Thi Ninh, AVLD Patron, President, Ho Chi Minh City Peace and Development Foundation; Mr Trent Davies, Senior Director, Trade & Investment | Trade Lead, SEA, Global Victoria; Mr. Layton Pike, Chair of Advisory Board, AVLD, Executive Director, International, RMIT University; and Dr. Melissa Jardine, Board Chair,AVLD; along with over 60 distinguished leaders, experts, scholars, and individuals who have made significant contributions to the strategic partnership between Vietnam and Australia.

The Melbourne announcement ceremony was graced by Ms Fiona Letos, Executive Director Trade, Global Engagement and International Education, Global Victoria, and Mr Simon White, Board of Advisor, AVLD and President, AVBCQ. Our esteemed Patron in Australia Sir Peter Cosgrove, General the Honourable, AK AC(Mil) CVO MC (Retd) sent a special video message as well.
The Melbourne presentation was initiated by Nina McLean, former AVLD Co-Program Director, captivating an audience of over 60 distinguished guests. Both Sir Peter Cosgrove and Ms. Fiona Letos gave inspiring speeches on the importance of Australia and Vietnam’s relationship and congratulated our esteemed delegates for their acceptance into the dialogue.
The 5-Day Residential AVYLD Program is a unique opportunity for emerging young leaders from Australia and Vietnam to come together and engage in a comprehensive agenda consisting of engaging workshops, expert-led discussions, immersive cultural experiences, and networking opportunities. The program is designed around key United Nations Sustainable Development Goals of Quality Education; Gender Equality; Sustainable Cities and Communities; Climate Actions; Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions; and Partnerships for the Goals.
Both events were a rousing success, both a fitting celebration of a prosperous 50 year collaboration between Australia and ASEAN, spotlighting the distinguished achievements and untapped potential held by the esteemed delegates selected for the prestigious 2024.
This year, 2024, marks a momentous milestone in Australia and ASEAN’s relationship, with the 50th anniversary of dialogue partnership. This is celebrated through this year’s Program theme of ‘Strategic Partners: Elevating Our Region’.
The selection process was highly competitive, with over 375 applications, and the 20 delegates were handpicked due to their exceptional leadership qualities, commitment to cross-cultural collaboration, and passion for shaping the bilateral relationship between Australia and Vietnam.
The selected delegates represent talent from various sectors, including Education, Development, Agriculture, Supply Chain, NGO/NFP, Government, Media, Tech, Music, Consulting, etc. The successful recipients of the program are:
